Homework
The second grade expectation for homework is a minimum of twenty minutes of reading every night. In addition, the district wide expectation is that all second graders have mastery of addition and subtraction facts to 20 with automaticity.
Spelling Words/Tests
Each week your child will bring home a list of spelling words in his/her Take Home Folder. Spelling Word Lists will include phonics pattern words and sight words/high frequency words. Spelling Tests will be every Friday and will measure your child's knowledge of the phonics patterns and the week's high frequency words. Each word is said twice and will be used in a sentence. Your child must use their knowledge of the phonics pattern and context clues.
Phonics Assessment Information
Phonics Assessments will also be given weekly to assess your child's knowledge of letter sounds, letter recognition, coding and reading words, as well as sentence dictation. Some sections of the weekly Phonics Assessment will be given in a whole group or small group setting, while other sections will be given individually.

Reading Log
Please have your child read for a minimum of 20 minutes each night. A monthly reading incentive chart will be provided at the beginning of each month. Students will earn Brag Points (House Points) upon completion. Charts are due on the last day of the month.
Math Facts
Practicing basic addition and subtraction facts is encouraged and recommended, as mastery of these facts allows for easier, more efficient problem solving in double and triple digit addition and subtraction with and without regrouping. Below are links to ClassLink, where your child can access ReFlex, our math facts online program, as well as to flashcards you can print and use to practice at home.
